SULLIVAN – State representative Charlie Schlottach has reached his term limit, prompting four area residents to run for his seat in the 111th District.Dave Schatz of Sullivan, Justin Charboneau of Gerald, and Jeffrey Landwehr, also of Gerald, have filed as Republican candidates. Tod DeVeydt has filed as the Democratic candidate. Residents interested in running for political office still have time – filing doesn’t close until March 30, Franklin County Clerk Debbie Door said. If DeVeydt is still the only Democratic candidate when filing closes, his name will automatically be placed on the November ballot. But Schatz, Charboneau and Landwehr will have to face off in the Aug. 3, Primary Election to see which Republican will advance to the November election. If Schatz or DeVeydt wins the 111th District seat, it would be the first time in Missouri’s history that a Sullivan resident will serve as a representative. Sullivan native Schatz, who announced months ago he would run on the Republican ticket for the 111th District, is kicking off his campaign with a fish fry Friday night. The event will be held at 6 p.m. March 5, at the Eagles Hall in Sullivan located at 1000 Acid Mine Road. The fish fry is free and those in attendance will have a chance to win a shotgun donated by Ruby’s Guns. “I look forward to meeting the citizens of the 111th District, and for the opportunity to gain their support,” said Schatz, 46, who hopes to win the Primary Election in August. Schatz, who owns and operates Schatz Underground Cable in Villa Ridge, is married to Chara, and they five children. He said his lifelong interest in politics prompted him to run for state office. Schatz believes his experience as a family man and business owner is what sets him apart from others. “What I have learned over the years as a husband, father, small business owner and employer have educated me in a way that I believe makes me uniquely qualified to represent the 111th District,” he said. “It will allow me to connect with the citizens of the district in a way that someone without these personal experiences cannot. I am truly excited for this opportunity.” Schatz said he feels compelled to run for office because he’s unhappy with the current state of affairs. Specifically, he’s concerned that senators and congressmen – at the state and federal levels – are not representing the views of their constituents. “The people we put in office need to represent what the people want, not their own agenda,” Schatz told the Sullivan Journal in December when he announced his plans to run for the 111th District. A member of the National Rifle Association, Schatz is big on Second Amendment rights. “There are core issues that I believe in, like the right to bear arms,” he said. “Pro-Life is another one of the conservative issues that I hold true.” Schatz also is concerned about how taxpayers’ dollars are being used, and wants to hold the government accountable for the money it’s spending. Schatz and his family are members of Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan, where he has previously served as a board member. He also has served as a school board member for the Spring Bluff School District, been a mentor at Sullivan High School and volunteered as a coach for area sports teams.
