School Board: Daniel Schatz's jersey will go to his family

SULLIVAN -- The Sullivan School District Board of Education has announced plans to honor the memory of former student and football star Daniel Schatz, who was killed in a car accident Aug. 5, by donating his football jersey to his family. At a date that has not yet been determined, the Sullivan High School and head football coach Pat Burke will hold a ceremony to raise a banner commemorating the accomplishments of Schatz's 2008 football team. During that ceremony, Schatz's family will be presented with their son's black football jersey. Schatz's white jersey will be displayed on campus at a location that will be decided by Burke and other school administrators. Schatz's #22 jersey will not be worn by any football player during the 2010 season, but.....

Meramec Community Fair does better, but future funding in doubt

SULLIVAN – After losing money in 2009, the Meramec Community Fair turned a profit this year. But not without a $35,000 shot in the arm from a city grant that may be ending. Final numbers are still being tabulated, but the Meramec Community Fair Board estimates a profit between $10,000 and $12,000, Board President Jim Bartle told the city council at it’s meeting last week. “I feel the fair was a great success for 2010,” he said, noting a combination of factors led to that success. That wasn’t necessarily the case in 2009 when the fair lost roughly $30,000. That fair was poorly attended when temperatures hovered near 100 degrees and heat.....

Florissant teen drowns in Meramec

STANTON - A Florissant teen is dead after trying to swim across the Meramec River Sunday afternoon to a rope swing, reports the Missouri State Water Patrol. According to reports, Joseph Barnes, 17, drowned sometime around 3 p.m. Sunday near Meramec Caverns while swimming in the river. The Water Patrol reports that Barnes was on his way across the river when he called out for help and then submerged, but failed to come back up. His body was recovered in 7 feet of water at 4:25 p.m. by a diver from the Sullivan Fire Protection District. Also responding to the scene, which is about three miles east of Interstate 44 in southwest Franklin County, were law enforcement officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
